The Power of Juice

Hello, friends! Happy Sunday! It is a gray, rainy, nasty day here, so I’m glad we got outside yesterday while it was so nice.

This morning, I wrote in bed for about an hour…I’m pretty proud of myself!  I made it my goal to write more this week, and I actually did it! I’m working on a new writing project, so I feel like I have a newfound vigor in my willingness to work—that’s always exciting.

After writing (and blog-perusing), Ryan and I headed to the gym around 11, and I discovered the beauty of the Pandora app. on my i-phone.  Holy moly! How did I ever live without this thing?  I only wish I’d had it for my long runs when I was training for my half-mary back in the fall.  Oh well…hopefully there will be more long races in my future! My friend Mary Margaret is an UBER-runner…she’s run one full marathon and three (maybe four?) halves, so we’re talking about trying to run a half together at some point next summer or fall.

In any case, I was having so much fun rocking out to my Glee/Beyonce/Miley Cyrus (yeah, I listen to Miley…what of it?)/Michael Jackson station, that before I knew it, an hour had passed!  It was a great workout, all around.

When we got home, I decided to make us some green juice as an extra energy boost.  Well…things started to get a little nasty.

In our juicer, I combined: two carrots, cucumber, 2 celery stalks, parsley, spinach, and ginger.

Doesn’t sound that bad, right? RIGHT?

Wrong.

Everything started out pleasantly enough (although if you look closely enough, you can see a hint of fear in my eyes):

Please excuse my “au naturel” state…we literally had JUST walked in the door from the gym.

Even Ryan was excited about it!  Well, maybe excited is too strong a word…but he was willing to try it:

(Notice how his glass is about HALF of the amount of mine…what a wimp!)

Devil, thy name is green juice:

Well…Ryan was able to chug his in a few gulps, which definitely worked to his advantage.  Best to just get it over and done with.  I, on the other hand, chugged about half of mine before setting the glass down on the counter and exclaiming, “Dear GOD, that’s foul!!!!”

It took me about five minutes to finally get it down.  At the halfway point, I was spewing expletives left and right, and making this pleasant face:

This picture does nothing to capture the disgust I was feeling.  All I can say is, that juice better be a freaking MIRACLE drink.  Ugh.

After finishing my juice from hell health tonic, I headed upstairs to cry in the shower freshen up. Once showered and clean, I put together a delicious lunch featuring one of my favorite easy dishes: curried chickpea mash (combine 2/3 cup chickpeas, 1 tbsp. Nasoya veganaise, 1 tbsp. yellow curry powder, and MASH!),  It was just as good as it was the first time I had it!

This time, instead of eating it in a wrap, I served it over spinach and brown rice.  Still topped it off with golden raisins and coconut though—the toppings are the best part!

And that, my friends, was lunch! This afternoon, I think we’re heading to the mall to return my present.  A trip to the grocery store is also in order.  Hope you’re having a great day!

OH!!! And, I know that many of you have asked me about whether or not cleaning up the juicer is a hassle.  I timed myself this time, and it took me 4 minutes to clean the entire thing by hand!  Not bad at all!

See you tonight!

That juice needed some fruit in a bad, bad way. At least you got it down. Yuck! I’m going to try the chickpea mash tomorrow! Thanks for the idea.

Haha.. yeah, that doesn’t look too pleasant. :P At least you finished it though, that takes COURAGE. Hopefully your next green juice is 1000000000x better than this one!

One reason why green juice is NOT for me! I’d rather eat my veggies, thank you!

That salad looks awesome! It reminds me of a pita that I get from a certain deli here, with vegenaise, tofu and curry. Enjoy your Sunday!

Stick an apple in there, it’ll make it taste better. I find that I need one piece of sweet fruit in my juice to stomach it. Personally, I don’t like celery in juice, but that might just be my preference.

You want to be careful mixing ginger as it can over take the flavor. Ginger is warming which is great for winter months… I wouldn’t do parsley and ginger in the same blend.. parsley would go good with lime…. also adding a GREEN apple would help… you always want to juice green apple vs other apples as it has less sugar. Try not to juice more than 2 carrots at a time.. carrots contains a lot of sugar and since the juice doesn’t contain any fiber it would be better to keep at 2 carrots. It take a while to find a good blend that you like but once you get the hang of it you know how much of everything to add to make it just right. My fav that i have every morning is kale/spinach/collards/green apple/carrot/celery. But then again adding too much kale or collards would make the juice have a bite if that makes sense. Beet is also good in a juice.. but I wouldn’t do beet and carrot in the same juice.. Hope this helps :)

LOL. I love your “icky” face! :P

I hope you get to run a half with your friend! It’s so fun to plan races with friends. I think a blogger friend of mine may run the half with us on May 1st.

What writing assignment are you working on?

Hey Kim! I’m working on a new creative non-fiction project. I got my MFA in poetry, but I took a memoir class in grad school that I really liked, and my desire to write poetry has been lacking lately, so I decided to give the old non-fiction a try again!

RE: yogaworks DVD…I don’t have the beginners one, but I’d like to give it a try. I have the ‘abs specific’ one, but I haven’t tried it yet…I’m kind of scared! :-)

Haha that was my very first reaction to juices as well but after a while I found a mix that worked well with me.

[...] I made some more green juice.  Luckily, it was a more pleasant experience than last week’s juice from hell.  That juice kept me away from the juicer all week, but finally today I was ready to give it [...]
